Car Loan Scheme
The Church Commissioners have issued a consultation document about a proposal to stop the clergy car loan scheme. Although this would not affect those who have existing loans, if the proposal were to go ahead no new loans would be granted.
The consultation document itself can be found below. It should perhaps be pointed out that the Church Commissioners proposals cover a number of other technical loans through Dioceses as well which would probably affect us much less than the abolition of car loans. One of the tensions is that the Church Commissioners see the car loans as an interest-bearing investment, whereas many clergy see them as a part of the financial remuneration. If you have any views which you would like to express then please do write to Andrew Brown, the Secretary to the Church Commissioners at Church House, Great Smith Street, London SW1P 3JZ. It is also possible that there may be some correspondence in the letters pages of the Church press. Alternatively please do contact me direct if any further explanation would be helpful. With all good wishes,
Steven Betts
(Chair of the House of Clergy in the Diocese)
