In our February edition we featured a letter from Marion Courtney of St John's Harleston, about the Christian charity 'Compassion' and her work in sponsoring a child through the charity.

Compassion seeks out some of the world's most vulnerable children and through individual sponsors provides them with the means to break the cycle of poverty and create a viable future. In February this year Compassion International reached an historic and significant milestone. Jeffry Francisco Acevedo Perez from Nicaragua became the organisation’s one millionth registered child. From small beginnings in 1952, Compassion has been working for over 50 years to release children from poverty and giving them the spiritual, physical, social and emotional support they need to live a fulfilled life. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors across the world, Compassion is now supporting over 1 million children. Compassion UK CEO, Ian Hamilton said of the landmark, "We praise and thank God for His provision upon reaching this wonderful milestone, yet we know there are countless millions still uncared for. God’s people, the Church, are awaking to their responsibilities made very clear through the Biblical mandate. Governments will not eradicate poverty, acute or otherwise, but the Church can.” "The Lord has done great things for us, and we are glad. Those who sow in tears will reap in joy. He who continually goes forth weeping, bearing seed for sowing, shall doubtless come again with rejoicing, bringing his sheaves with him." Psalm 126:3,5&6 Marion suggested to St John’s congregation that they could work together to sponsor a child. “ Not everyone”, Marion said, “ can afford to sponsor a child on their own so I asked for commitments of whatever the congregation could afford and as a parish we could try to sponsor a child.” As we reported this was a success and a 4th child has now been sponsored. This is an innovative way of sponsorship and other parishes may wish to do something similar. More information can be found on Compassions’s website www.compassionuk.org
